May brings more than flowers! Hummingbirds, Orioles, Catbirds, and More!

I moved last year and now live on the edge of a huge park along a major creek. The park is alive year round with a variety of birds and raptors, as well as other wildlife, but the birds are especially active right now.

This week, for the first time, I saw a Baltimore Oriole, a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, and Red-Wing Blackbirds at my feeders. I've also been successful at luring the adorable American Goldfinches to my WBU QuickClean® Finch Seed Tube feeder. The Grey Catbirds, Song Sparrows, Finches, and other birds are in and out of my feeders all day! Next? I am hoping for the backyard favorites to visit my feeding stations: Cardinal and Eastern Bluebird pairs.

Be sure to get your nectar, jelly, and fruit out for the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, Baltimore Orioles, and Grey Catbirds and other fruit loving backyard birds!

Here's what's happening this month in Southeastern Pennsylvania:

  • Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, nighthawks, Wood Thrushes, Veerys and Chimney Swifts return.
  • The first fireflies of the year can be seen.
  • Peak of warbler migration happens early in the month.
  • Mimic thrushes such as mockingbirds, catbirds and Brown Thrashers return.
  • Sub-adult Purple Martins return to establish new colonies early in the month.
  • Peak of bird courtship. Listen for the dawn chorus.
  • Nesting materials are being collected.
  • Orioles return and begin nesting. Be sure to have their feeders, nectar, fruit and jelly out early.
  • Indigo Buntings return and are very vocal.
  • Chickadees and titmice become scarce at feeders as they nest and raise their young.
  • Mosquitoes can begin to be a problem. Refresh bird bath water often to deter them from breeding.
  • Mayapples, Chicory and Primrose are in bloom.
  • Poison Ivy blooms. Watch out!
  • Eta Aquarids meteor shower is early-May.
  • International Migratory Bird Day is mid-May.

When you're doing your Spring planting, don't forget to include native plants and flowers for the song birds!
